Subtitling for your YouTube channel

YouTube is currently the leading online video platform, and the second most-used search engine in the world; it is also the top music streaming platform. In other words, having a YouTube channel can vastly improve your brand awareness and ensure a global presence, virtually at no cost.

YouTube is the go-to site for billions of users all over the world eager to consume content of any kind: music, comedy, news, social commentary, education, training and problem solving and much more. By providing closed captions and/or subtitles to your audience, you can achieve the following goals:

Benefits of YouTube Subtitles

  • Global Reach — Subtitles in several languages allow your YouTube content to be consumed by viewers from any country without having to produce video content in their native language. This cuts down the cost and the time needed to produce and manage professional multilingual content — you do not have to prepare, shoot, edit and manage N versions of each video, one for each language but just upload subtitle files, and copy-paste appropriate titles and descriptions for your videos. You can also greatly increase the number of views and subscribers because you will no longer be confined to your native language speakers, who could result in new leads and potential customers.
  • Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) — Including closed captions and subtitles with your YouTube videos allows search engines to index the text included in your videos and your translated titles and descriptions, which is great for your SEO and Google ranking. You will be able to appear in search results for keywords and phrases in several languages — which again, will expand your pool of influence.
  • Accessibility — Closed captions and subtitles ensure your videos are accessible for all audiences, including the deaf and hearing impaired

Things to take into account

  • Beware of AI - The automatic transcription provided by YouTube can often be completely unreliable when it comes to terminology, punctuation, and timiing. Never take the automatically-generated file you download as a verbatim transcription of what is actually spoken within your video. Always have it reviewed by someone before submitting it for translation. Also, note that Google does NOT index the automatically generated captions of your YouTube videos but it DOES index the ones you upload. This means you will be in a better position for SEO.
  • Speed & Layout - If you plan to have your videos subtitled, always make sure the rate of the dialogue is not too fast, as this would make creating properly synchronised, and readable subtitles impracticle if not impossible. Please also make sure there is no relevant information (such as text of small images) in the lower part of the screen, which would be covered by the subtitles.
  • Subtitling is not transcribing - This may seeem obvious to some but it is often completely unclear to many. Closed captions as well as subtitles in a foreign language aim to help the viewer understand and enjoy the content of the video at the same rate as that achievable by a native viewer without hearing disabilities. Watching, reading and listening to a foreign language at the same time requires much more effort than just watching and listening in one's own native language. The eyes are constantly fighting between watching the overall content and focussing on the lower end where the subtitles appear. Moreover, there is no time to read long lines of text at the same pace the words are spoken in the video. Hence, often subtitles are a shortened, summed-up version of the actual speech in the video while still retaining its meaning. This is why speaking as clearly and consistently as possible, especially in the case of technical or scientfical content, is very important, because - unlike general conversations - technology and science usually rely on long and complicated words, and they cannot be skipped or oversimplified without compromising the original message.
